Sponged Sky

Published by inkypaws at 2:06 pm under Elzybells, Tutorials

I’ve been asked many times how I do my skies and grasses. Today I’m going to talk about how I do a Sponged Sky.

I used Georgia Pacific White cardstock, a round sponge that was cut in quarters from Stampin’ Up and the Party Pup and Everyday Greetings sets from Elzybells Art Stamps for this tutorial.

1. Stamp your image on both the white cardstock and post it notes for masks. Cut out your masks and cover the areas that require masking.

2. Ink your sponge and then tap off onto scrap paper until there is just a little ink. Sponge using the rounded part of the sponge to eliminate hard lines. Keep adding color a little bit at a time, the more you layer the color the better. Leave some areas light and make some areas darker. I used Taken with Teal ink for this sample, but you can use any color blue, or get wild and add a little purple, pink or orange for a sunset or stormy looking sky.

3. Here is what it will look like when you remove the masks. Save your masks! They can be used again.

4. After cutting my panel to size I sponged a little more ink around the outer edges.

Great technique! Sponging can be so tricky, and you have been so helpful to us! Eliminating the hard lines and edges is sometimes difficult…I will try stamping off some of the ink first, I think that’s been my downfall!!! THANK YOU! :D
